As expected, Guardians of the Galaxy appears to be well on its way to winning this weekend at the U.S. box office. According to projections, Guardians of the Galaxy took in $2.7 million at the U.S. box office on Friday, which by far puts the film in the #1 spot for the day.

Let's Be Cops is projected to finish second with $1.5 million, which is only a little over half of Guardians of the Galaxy's total. Overall, the movie weekend after Labor Day weekend is projected to be dismal, as is often expected for this time of year.

Based on Friday numbers, Guardians of the Galaxy is projected to bring in around $10 million over this weekend, which will raise the films total take to the $294 million to $295 million range. The film should soon become the first film of the year to pass $300 million at the U.S. box office sometime over the next week or so.

Updated: Of note, by winning this weekend at the U.S. box office, Guardians of the Galaxy will have won its fourth weekend at the U.S. box office, which breaks the record for most weekend wins this year at the box office. Ride Along, The LEGO Movie, and Captain America: The Winter Soldier all won three weekends at the U.S. box office earlier this year. The last movie to win four weekends at the U.S. box office was The Hunger Games back in 2012.

Next weekend, Guardians of the Galaxy will face much stiffer competition in the form of new releases No Good Deed and Dolphin Tale 2. Guardians of the Galaxy will likely dip into single digit millions next weekend, so it's probably unlikely to win a fifth weekend.
