The official U.S. weekend box office projections are out, and as expected, Guardians of the Galaxy was the clear winner. Guardians of the Galaxy was the only film to break into the double digit millions this weekend, nearly doubling the weekend box office of its next closest competitor.

Guardians of the Galaxy finished in the top spot with an estimated $10.16 million for the September 5th through September 7th, 2014 weekend. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles took second place with an estimated $6.5 million, and If I Stay took third place with an estimated $5.75 million. Let's Be Cops took fourth place with $5.4 million, and The November Man rounded out the top 5 with $4.2 million.

Not a single new release film (not that there were many) finished in the top ten at this weekend's box office. The Identical had the highest total of any new release, finishing eleventh with $1.9 million.

With this weekend's numbers, Guardians of the Galaxy also moved into the top 50 highest grossing movies of all time at the domestic box office.

Guardians of the Galaxy has now made $294.5 million though 38 days of release at the U.S. box office. Guardians of the Galaxy is actually outpacing the original Iron Man, which made $288.8 million during its first 38 days of release. This data is important, because if Guardians of the Galaxy tops Iron Man's $318.4 million domestic box office, then it will become Marvel Studios third highest grossing movie of all time at the domestic box office.

Of course, Robert Downey Jr. likely won't be upset, because he's already gone on record praising Guardians of The Galaxy as the best Marvel movie ever. Plus, Downey Jr. can always point to the numbers for Iron Man 3 and The Avengers, which are likely way out of reach for Guardians of the Galaxy.
