A New X-Wing Variant Seems To Be Hanging Out On The Star Wars Set

X-Wing Fighters

If I recall correctly, the colour black was pretty much always saved for the bad guys in Star Wars. Most obviously there was Darth Vader, and in Rebels there's the Inquisitor, and I can think of all sorts of other examples from the detailing on Stormtroopers to the armour for TIE fighter pilots.

The exception to this, I think, was Luke Skywalker, particularly in Return of the Jedi. They were playing with us there, to some extent, though, and asking to us to consider the possibility of Luke giving over to the dark side.

I was thinking of these things when I looked at this image from the Star Wars Episode VII set, as snagged from Twitter by Making Star Wars. If you look closely you might see, parked on the concrete up in the top left of the image, something that looks like a black X-Wing.

So, is this black because it belongs to the villains, whoever they may be? Or is it Luke's? I think I can see red markings on the wings which would suggest it's actually likely to be part of some military line, in some way.

Or... is it just pareidolia and there's no X-Wing there at all? Because stranger things have happened. Perhaps JJ Abrams' chose yesterday to tip a hint that the Empire might be back for a reason. They do know what they're filming outdoors today, after all.

Star Wars Episode VII will be released on December 18th 2015 in 2D, 3D and IMAX.
