Yondu Disney Infinity

Right now, I'm waiting on the postman to bring me my copy of Disney Infinity 2.0, the Marvel Superheroes edition of Disney's spin on the Skylanders-style "toys to life game." I'm not waiting particularly patiently as I absolutely loved the first iteration, despite a few odd quirks, and knowing that this time, I'll get to play as Iron Man, Hulk and Rocket Raccoon is just making me crazy with anticipation.

Just to crank me up even more, Disney have now officially announced a pair of extra playable characters for the game: Captain America's chum Falcon, aka Sam Wilson, and Yondu, from Guardians of the Galaxy. By purchasing the little figurine of either - and the Infinity vinyl figures truly are beautiful little models, beloved even of collectors who don't play the game - you'll be able to unlock them for gameplay.

Interestingly, Yondu was already due to be part of the game, both as a mission giver in the Guardians play set and as a "team up" character, an NPC that could be summoned for some assistance by players lucky enough to have purchased the appropriate blind-bagged "power disc." I expect Yondu has been recently beefed up being a playable figure due to the incredible popularity of Guardians in cinemas.

This image of the Yondu figure comes courtesy of Variety. You can also see Yondu and Falcon in action in the following video. According to Variety, Guardians of the Galaxy are the game's top overall pre-selling figures and playsets with Rocket Raccoon the number character and Groot the number three character.

What's happened here is that somebody has gotten their hands on the game early and looked through the menus at the various character options. Where they didn't have a certain character unlocked - and in the case of Falcon and Yondu, nobody will have them unlocked until the figures launch at some as-yet unspecified point in the future - you can still watch a little video. These kind of work like commercials for the characters, teasing you with what you don't have and ensuring that you - well, I at least - jump up place a pre-order for the figure. I remember that it took me about six seconds to pre-order Jack Skellington after I found his clip in the first game.

In the case of Disney Infinity's first edition, it was possible to see all upcoming characters as soon as you had the game disc by perusing the "Hall of Heroes" hub room and watching their videos. In the case of 2.0, however, there are apparently some entirely secret characters that are deeply hidden and won't leave any kind of trace ahead of time. So, you never know, I might get those Kermit, Wall-E and Remy from Ratatouille figures that I've been dreaming of.

Disney Infinity 2.0 is released in the UK on September 19th and the US on September 23rd. As well as the Avengers-centric starter pack, day one will also see release of Spider-Man and Guardians of the Galaxy play sets as well as several other the figures. Oh, Venom, you will be mine.
