According to Deadline, Matt Damon is going to once again return to the role of Jason Bourne. Universal Pictures is reportedly in process of making a deal not only with Damon but also with director Paul Greengrass to reunite for their third film together in The Bourne Identity series. Neither Univeral nor Damon and Greengrass' reps would comment on the story.

According to Deadline's sources, the new Bourne film with Matt Damon would go into production as the next Bourne film in the series. Universal had already laid claim to the release date of July 16, 2016 for an untitled Bourne film, which most had believed would star Jeremy Renner and be directed by Fast & Furious' Justin Lin.

However, the Renner spinoff sequel would reportedly be pushed back, and Damon's return to the series would take precedence. The Renner series would remain in development and be released at a later date. Universal sees having both Damon and Renner as the best of two worlds for continuing to build the Bourne franchise. Lin is signed on to direct the second season of True Detective, so it would also allow him time to focus on that series.
