The most famous Canadian comic book character ever created is going to die next month, and so it seems only appropriate that the civic government of Edmonton would honor him in some way, eh?

That's the basic message fans are trying to send to Edmonton Mayor Don Iveson, with a Change.org petition to get a life-sized statue of the Ol' Canucklehead commissioned.

As of this writing, they've just passed 100 signatures on their way to what they hope will be 100,000.

Here's the wording of the petition as posted by Jesse Seitz, its originator:

Not many popular or exciting fictional characters are born Canadian but superhero and adventurer Wolverine isn't just Canadian, he's an Albertan too. I think it would make a lot of people really proud to live in Edmonton and raise morale to erect a life size statue of this character in City Hall, or even perhaps Churchill Square or the Alberta Legislature Grounds. It would also become an interesting tourist attraction for comic book fans visiting our city.

...And here's the recommended letter that he's asking Change.org members to sign:

To:
City Council/Mayor Don Iveson

Please consider the opinions of the citizens who have signed this petition towards the creation of a life sized Wolverine statue to be placed somewhere in this great city of Edmonton to be viewed by all who live here and visit, as Wolverine is a Canadian and Albertan symbol of strength, perseverance in the face of tragedy, and overall heroics.

Sincerely,
[Your name]

As you can see, the petition itself isn't linked specifically to the currently-ongoing The Death of Wolverine story...which is probably better considering that even non-comics-readers know how short-lived a comic book death can often be.
