Terry Gilliam, the award-winning Monty Python and the Holy Grail director who almost made Watchmen, is the director of the new film Zero Theorem -- and it's got a Church of Batman in it.

Yeah, you read that right.

"We have to believe in something, don't we?" Gilliam said in an interview with IGN (embedded below). "And I think comic book heroes are the new apostles, the new prophets. They're all there!"

Gilliam goes on to say that there would be plenty of foundation for a Church of Batman, noting that hardcore comic fans know as much about the backstories and details of the characters as do most religious people about the Bible.

He also admitted that he hasn't watched many superhero films -- not because he's got anything against them, but just becuase he doesn't go do the movies much -- but that he is a bit frustrated that they're such a dominant voice in the industry, squeezing out other movies.

Zero Theorem is available on VOD and in select theaters now.
