A long lost Sherlock Holmes silent film, starring William Gillette, has been found at the French film archive Cinémathèque Française.

Gillette was known the world over for his portrayal of Holmes on stage. It was Gillette who first put on Holmes' now signature deerstalker hat.

This silent film, originally produced in 1916, is the only time Gillette was captured in the role on film, and its resurfacing gives new generations the opportunity to see his performance for the first time.

The film is in the process of being restored and will be shown at the San Francisco Silent Film Festival in May 2015.
