The Hobbit: The Battle Of The Five Armies Debuts With $90.6 Million Opening To Lead Box Office

$90.6 million was the sum to rule them all. It's also the first five day box office total of The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies.

The final installment of the J.R.R. Tolkien fantasy epic debuted Wednesday at 3,875 locations and easily surpassed the estimated figures that placed the movie opening in the $70 million range, according to Variety.

Unlike the opening weekends of Hobbit prequels: The Unexpected Journey and The Desolation of Smaug, The Battle of the Five Armies faced considerable competition with the release of two popular family favorites: Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb and Annie. However, both films have suffered considerable setbacks as well.

Coming in second at $17.3 million, this is the poorest opening to date for a Night at the Museum film. The original film debuted to $30.4 million in 2006 and 2009's Battle of the Smithsonian premiered with $54.2 million at the box office.

Despite all of the controversy surrounding email hack of its parent studio Sony, Annie actually exceeded its projected $15 million opening and came in third with $16.3 million.

Exodus: Gods and Kings dropped from the top spot last week to fourth with $8 million.

With $7.7 million, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 rounds out the top five at the box office.
