Director Neill Blomkamp, best known for directing District 9 and Elysium, kicked off the new year in style when he started posting concept art from a mysterious Alien project. The concept art include designs with Xenomorphs/Aliens, Sigourney Weaver's 'Ripley' and Michael Biehn's 'Corporal Dwayne Hicks.' The response to the images were extremely positive, but what people wanted to know was what were they for? Were they for an Alien video game, or could it be for an Alien movie?

A new interview with Blomkamp has uncovered the mystery of the Alien concept art. They were for a potential Alien movie! Yahoo!

"Basically, what happened was, when Chappie got heavily into post-production, I could take my foot off the gas a bit," Blomkamp told uproxx.com. "I was thinking about what I wanted to do next and I've been wanting to make an Alien film for like years and years."

This news to us and everyone else as Blomkamp has never publicly said he had interest in making a film in the Alien universe that was created by Ridley Scott in 1979. And who do we have to thank for Blomkamp's reenergized interest in Alien? "Speaking to Sigourney Weaver, when we were doing Chappie, she set off a bunch of thoughts in my head," Blomkamp recalled. "I had come up with an idea that didn't have Sigourney, it was a different idea. But I spent all of the shooting time with her, it was like, holy shit, that could actually be really interesting. When I came back to Vancouver, I had an entire year to work on Chappie. And when I wasn't needed in the edit, I could think about Alien. So, I basically developed an entire movie and I did all of this artwork as well."

"If it's going to happen, it has to be on my terms," Blomkamp said. The artwork that he posted on his Instagram was just a small portion of what he had his artists design for his Alien vision. And it isn't just artwork, Blomkamp says he has put together "a whole story" to go along with the images.

Oddly enough, the reason Blomkamp released the images was because he wasn't sure if he would make another movie ever again. It is odd because Blomkamp is considered one of the best young directors, but navigating Hollywood has already worn him down.

Is there any hope that Blomkamp will actually make his Alien film? Blomkamp replied, "There's a high possibility, a high degree of chance that it happens that I go back and try to get Alien made."

You might think the hold up is 20th Century Fox, who own the rights to Alien, but Blomkamp says that isn't the case. Fox wants to make his film, but Blomkamp confesses that he is the problem.

Hopefully he stops mulling it over and just agrees to do it. I think most of us would rather see Blomkamp's Alien film instead of Prometheus 2. All he has to do is call Fox and it is a go. Make that call, Neill.
