The gate to the Alexandria community opens and the group enters, hesitantly. Carl sees a young girl watching them from an abandoned house outside the community. A rodent knocks over a trash can and startles the group. Daryl shoots it with his crossbow and tells the group they have dinner. The group enters and the gate closes.

The man from the community, Nicholas, asks the group to turn over their weapons. Rick refuses. Aaron suggests they talk to Deanna first, she knows everything about the community. Rick notices a walker approaching the gate and commands Sasha to gun it down.

Rick evaluates a house. A woman introduces herself, Deanna Monroe. She asks for Rick's permission to film the discussion, which he is okay with. She tells him they're about transparency. She asks Rick questions about the groups journey to Alexandria. Deanna tells Rick she was in congress in Ohio. She explains the community to Rick and what it was before the apocalypse. She ended up there on her way back to Ohio. She was stopped by the army and directed to the community. The army said they would come, but they didn't. Deanna's people found supplies and made the best of it.

Rick is questioning the community. Deanna tells Rick her husband built the walls and built a community. She was stuck with her husband, Reg and her two sons. They used supplies from a shopping mall being built to build the walls. She says they need people who have lived "out there." Rick's group is the first they've considered bringing in. Rick says that Deanna should keep her gates closed because everything is about survival now and people measure you by what they can take.

Deanna questions whether Rick is suggesting she doesn't bring him and his people in or whether he's already looking after the community. Rick tells her he has killed people so that his family and group can be alive and he can be alive for them. Deanna says she wants to be part of Rick's family. She tells Rick about the evacuation and how she has lost people and done things like he has. Rick questions her. She tells him that she exiled three men who didn't work out, which is as good as killing them.

Rick asks what she wants from them. She tells him that families should be able to raise their families in a safe environment. She wants to provide a place for his son and daughter and for him to help protect the community. She says she is so good at reading people that she was going to be a professional poker player. She tells Rick what time it is. It's time to decide if he wants to join the community or not. Rick dials his watch.

He tells Deanna that he was a sheriff. She says she knew it was something like that.

The group hands over their guns and Deanna explains that they can take them whenever they go beyond the wall. Abraham is most hesitant and looks at Rick for final approval. Carol places her guns last, she's the most visibly happy to be there.

Aaron shows Rick two houses for him to choose from. He tells Rick that he's glad they came. He tells Rick to take his time and explore and to come to his house if Rick should need anything, which is four houses down. Rick hesitantly enters a house with Carl. It's clean furnished. There are towels on the table. Carl looks at the kitchen. There is running water. Rick takes a shower. He looks at himself in a fogged mirror then takes a pair of scissors and starts trimming his beard. He uses shaving cream to completely groom his face.

A woman knocks on the front door. Rick answers, skeptically. She works in the pantry and brought him some supplies. Rick tells her they're cleaning up. She introduces herself, she's Jessie. She used to be a stylist and offers to give Rick a haircut. Rick says, "You don't even know me." She does it anyway.

She tells Rick about her kids, Ron and Sam. Ron is her oldest, Carl's age. She wants to introduce them. Rick likes the idea. Rick talks about how he thought he would never see haircuts, electricity or water again. Jessie hands Rick a mirror and he looks at his clean-cut self.

Daryl gets interviewed by Deanna. She welcomes him to sit and asks if he wants to be there. Daryl thinks Carl and Judith deserve a roof.

Daryl skins the rodent on the front porch at Rick's house. Carol joins them, the group is inside. Carl leaves to go see another house with Carol. He says they're like mansions, which Carol acknowledges and thinks they're just giving them away. Rick, Daryl, and Carol talk about how the community is trying to split them up by houses.

Carl explores the house and goes upstairs. He draws his knife as he approaches a closed door. He rips it open only to find an empty attic. There are CDs, pillows, and comic books in the room. The group sets up their sleeping arrangements in the same house. Michonne is happy to have brushed her teeth. She says she's never seen Rick's face "like that." She talks to Rick quietly about playing it safe, but says she has "a good feeling about this place."

Deanna knocks on the door. She is delightfully surprised by Rick's lack of beard. She acknowledges that they're staying together and that they're a family. She talks about how amazing it is that they can become a family having been so different. Rick tells her that she gave everyone a job except him. She tells him she has, she just hasn't told him yet. Same for Michonne. She's trying to find one for Sasha and she hasn't figured Daryl out yet.

Rick wakes up in the living room and jolts up. He takes a knife from the kitchen drawer.

Michonne and Deanna conduct Michonne's interview. Michonne says they're ready for this- all of them. Rick invites Daryl to explore with the group, but Daryl chooses to stay on the porch. Rick tells Daryl that he and Lori used to drive through upscale neighborhoods like that, thinking "one day…"

Rick walks onto an empty street and can't see his group. He frantically runs to try and catch up to them. He runs into a sculpture and Jessie asks if he is okay. He asks if she's seen Carl or Judith. She guides him to Natalie and Bob Miller who are admiring Judith, they haven't seen a baby in a while. He apologizes for breaking her owl sculpture and she dismisses it. She asks if Carl can come over and meet her Ron.

Ron and Carl enter the house and talk about school, which Carl is surprised to learn they have. Ron introduces Carl to Enid and Mikey. Carl pulls out the comic and asks who's it is. It turns out to be Enid's comic. They tell him there's video games and a pool table which Mikey's dad is strict about, but Mikey's dad is at work so it'll be okay. Carl is overwhelmed.

Carl takes part in Deanna's interview. He says it's the kind of place his mom Lori would've wanted. Deanna says she's sorry that Carl lost her. He responds by saying, "I didn't lose her. I killed her."

Rick and Carl sit on Carl's bed discussing the community. Rick says it seems nice and Carl agrees, but fears they'll become weak like the people of the community.

Michonne wakes up and sees Rick standing by the window. She tells him Deanna hasn't given her a job yet. Rick asks if she wants one. She does. She asks if he does, he says, "signing the papers… that's saying yes, this is how it is." Michonne asks if he's afraid to do that, which he says no and asks if she is. She is not. She wonders why they're both awake then.

Rick walks around outside at night. A man says, "You're Rick." Rick acknowledges this. "My wife cut your hair," the man says. Rick acknowledges that, too. "Welcome to Alexandria," the man says. Rick walks off and the man smokes his cigarette.

Carol participates in an interview. She says she did laundry and made food for Ed and claims she misses him. She tells Deanna that she became the mother of the group and they've been nice enough to protect her. Deanna asks where she fits in and Carol says she wants to be involved in the community. She's a people person.

Carol walks outside to Daryl and tells him she'll be cooking for the old folks and meet people. She then tells Daryl to take a shower. Daryl says she looks ridiculous.

Glenn conducts his interview. He tells Deanna they need to make this work because they were almost out there too long.

The gate opens and Rick walks outside. He evaluates the walls and supports. Carl sits in the house and see Enid walking through the window. He gets up to watch her as she climbs the wall with her backpack and exits the community. Nicholas calls out Glenn, Tara, and Noah to point out he remembers their names. They hear Glenn has gone on supply runs. Aiden did ROTC. Noah says that his dad did ROTC, too, then tells Aiden his dad didn't make it. They're going to teach Glenn, Tara, and Noah on how to protect the community. Glenn asks about weapons and Nicholas hands each one a pistol.

Enid walks through the woods. Carl follows her. Enid starts running, so does Carl, knife in hand. He can't find her. and is disappointed. Rick comes out of the woods and sees a walker in the distance exiting a barn. He raises his revolver but then lowers it and walks away. He finds the abandoned house from the last episode and blender which he placed his gun in. He opens the blender only to find the gun is no longer there. The walkers are approaching. Rick holsters his revolver and takes his pack off.

Carl walks up to him from the side of the house. The two use a knife and machete to kill the incoming pack of walkers. Carl bails Rick out by putting down a walker that had him in his grasp, then takes a rod from Rick to kill one underneath a pile of garbage.

Glenn, Noah, Nicholas, Tara, and Aiden explore outside the community. Aiden explains that they cover certain same-circle radii, and he explains other protocol for working this job. They've made it 53 miles out so far. They fire a flare if things go bad. They call walkers "deadheads." They strung one up that got one of their people for a "pre game." They seek revenge on walkers that kill their friends.

However, the walker has broken free. Nicholas whistles to draws the walker out of the woods, and Aiden tries to chain it up. The walker puts up a fight, but Aiden tells everyone not to kill it. However, Glenn puts it down when Tara gets in trouble.

Aiden tells Glenn they're not ready for runs. They confront each other inside the gate. Aiden tries to pick a fight with Glenn. Aiden swings at Glenn, who ducks and punches him to the ground. Daryl jumps on Nicholas but Rick pulls him off. The fight defuses, and Deanna tells everyone that Rick and his people are part of the community now, as equals. Deanna orders everyone to turn in their weapons and demands Nicholas and Aiden come see her. Deanna tells Rick she wants him to be their constable. She tells Michonne she wants the same. She asks Rick if he will accept. He does. She then asks Michonne who accepts, as well. Daryl walks off. Deanna thanks Glenn, "for knocking him on his ass."

Carl asks Enid, "you don't like me, do you?" She walks off. Back to Rick's interview, where he says it's all about survival. He comes down the stairs in a police officer uniform. The group looks at him, awe-struck. Rick walks outside to talk to Daryl, who asks if he is a cop again. Rick doesn't give a definitive answer. Carol walks outside and asks if they're staying. Rick says they can sleep in their own homes. Carol doesn't want to become weak. Rick says it won't happen. They won't get weak, it's not in them anymore. He says they'll make it work and if the people of the safe-zone can't make it, him and the group will, "just take this place."
