Marvel is launching a new line of variant covers celebrating the city of New York. The covers, billed as a "love letter" to New York City, will grace several of Marvel's Comics during the month of May.
Fifteen Marvel titles will receive New York-centric covers in total, including The Amazing Spider-Man, Hulk, Howard the Duck, Uncanny X-Men, Hawkeye, and Daredevil. Marvel released several as previews through the New York Daily News and New York Post.
"New York City is in Marvel's DNA," Editor-in-chief Axel Alonso tells Daily News. "The company was born here and our heroes call it home. Whether it's the Avengers Mansion, Doctor Strange's Greenwich Village sanctum, Peter Parker's home in Queens or the countless other heroes who call the Big Apple home, Marvel and New York City have always gone hand in hand."
The variants come as DC Comics, previously Marvel's crosstown rivals, begins the process of uprooting their headquarters and relocating to Burbank, California.
"Superman lives in Metropolis. Batman lives in Gotham," Alonso told the Post. "But Spider-Man is from New York and lives in Queens. Our characters have always had an intimate relationship with the city."
Trolling DC Comics with variant covers seems to have become a tradition for Marvel, as seen with their dancing Deadpool variant and series of "WTD" covers.
