Last night's previously-reported $67 million opening for Furious 7 has now been confirmed, marking the film as the biggest April opening day of all time.

That opening just barely edged out The Hunger Games to crack the top ten biggest single-day grosses in movie history. Every movie in the top ten now is a part of a larger franchise, often fairly far down the line...and something that might speak volumes about the box office potential for Fast & Furious 8 and beyond: Excepting Marvel's The Avengers, all of the other franchises are either over, or will be by the time the next Fast & Furious is released.

Those franchises include the Dark Knight trilogy, Harry PotterTwilightThe Hunger Games and Iron Man.

The previous April title-holder for the biggest opening day (and weekend) was last year's Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

The film is expected to easily surpass $100 million in its opening frame and could take as much as $150 million over the holiday weekend. Last year, only two films opened with more than $100 million -- Transformers: Age of Extinction and The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part One

To date, the biggest opening for a Fast and Furious movie is the previous installment, Fast & Furious 6, which opened at $97 million.
