When Kevin Smith returns to the world of Clerks for Clerks 3, don't expect the film to be the jolliest of reunions.

In a recent interview, Smith likened the eventual Clerks threequel to the William Shakespeare tragedy, King Lear…but just with more snack food.

"I wrote Clerks 3 like a King Lear movie in a convenience store. It's funny, but it's f—ing sad," Smith said.

King Lear is a William Shakespeare tragedy where the titular character goes mad after he gives portions of his land to his daughters, based on how much they flatter him. As with most Shakespearean tragedies, the story ends in tears for all. Let's hope this convenience store comes stocked with plenty of Kleenex.

In his interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Smith said that he intends to revisit the world of Clerks sometime after he wraps up his current project, Yoga Hosers.

What do you think of Smith's comments? Is King Lear how you'd like Clerks 3 to shake out? Let us know in the comments.
