The timing of The Walking Dead's companion series, Fear The Walking Dead, sets it as a prequel. The two exist completely in the same universe.

More specifically, the timing of Fear will begin while Rick Grimes is in a coma on the opposite coast and Lori and Shane are just starting that fire. The Walking Dead writer and creator, Robert Kirkman, recently opened up a bit more about Fear's relationship to The Walking Dead.

"Everything that happens in Fear The Walking Dead is in the same universe as The Walking Dead," Kirkman told EW. "So any rule that we find out and anything they see in the early days is definitely something that was happening in the past of the other show. These two shows are very intertwined in the same world, even if their characters aren't necessarily going to interact because of geographical distances. So yeah, anything that you learn from Fear the Walking Dead will apply to the mythology of The Walking Dead and vice versa."

Despite there being no crossovers (yet), Fear will be very much linked to it's older brother. The big reveal from Kirkman's recent exploit came when he added to those statements...

"So you are going to get to see that the characters learn that they're all infected in a much different way. But all the rules do apply and are the same. That will be some of the fun if you're watching both shows," Kirkman explained.

How will the new characters find out they are all infected? They certainly won't be going to the CDC in Atlanta to meet Dr. Edwin Jenner, so will the dead rise from their graves or out of hospital beds? Will looters suddenly start eating people? No way of knowing just yet but it will be fun to see the dots connected as Fear The Walking Dead shows how the apocalypse began in The Walking Dead universe.

Fear The Walking Dead is set an August 2015 premiere.
