Yesterday, the Japanese entertainment website Eiga reported that whopping 50 million copies of Hajime Isayama's Attack On Titan manga have been sold in Japan. When circulation numbers were reported in April, the manga had 44 million copies sold in Japan.

Its publisher Kodansha Comics, also put out an English-language edition that has sold 2.5 million copies. That may not seem impressive, but it is. The North American comic book market is less than one-fifth the size of Japan's.

Manga could receive a nice bump in interest as the first of two live-action Attack on Titan films opened in Japanese theaters yesterday. TOHO expects the film to gross $40.3M ($5B yen).
