It seems Warner Bros. is bringing Scooby-Doo back to theaters, this time as an animated feature. THR reports that Tony Cervone, the Emmy-nominated animator who has helmed several direct-to-DVD Scooby films, is directing a new feature for Warner Animation.

Charles Roven and Richard Suckle, producers of the two live action Scooby movies from the early 2000s, will return to produce the animated feature, alongside Allison Abbate (The Iron Giant, Corpse Bride).

Phineas and Ferb creator Dan Povenmire is creatively involved with the project. Matt Lieberman wrote the script.

Warner Animation is hoping the new Scooby movie will be the first in a series of features based on Hanna-Barbera properties from the 1960s and '70s.

"Like countless fans, I have always loved the Hanna-Barbera cast of characters. As one of their most famous brand ambassadors, Scooby-Doo will take the lead in re-introducing this pantheon of enduringly popular animated stars on a grand scale with an exciting new movie," said president of creative development and worldwide production, Greg Silverman.

The new Scooby-Doo animated film is set for release on Sept. 21, 2018.
