While promoting The Iron Giant: Signature Edition -- in theaters September 30, 2015 -- director Brad Bird (Tomorrowland) shared a status update on the upcoming sequel to his 2004 hit The Incredibles.

According to him, The Incredibles II is progressing so well that Bird already has a large portion of the initial script completed and some of it has been storyboarded. "I have the story arc. I'm probably three-quarters through the script, first pass through the script, but we're already boarding parts of it," Bird told Collider. "I've got a lot of people that worked on the first one working on it, so we're all having a good time with it."

While many studios try to plant their flag early on a prime release date the moment a film goes into production, Pixar chose to remain quiet about when we might see The Incredibles II and their other highly-anticipated film Cars 3. However, Cars 3 was supposed to be released before The Incredibles sequel, but Bird says that's no longer the plan. "In terms of the release date, we were originally—Incredibles was supposed to happen after Cars, and our wheels just happened to click a little earlier so they moved us up," Bird revealed. "Release dates are a little fluid when you're making films so far in advance. Some films are tougher to come together and tough nuts to crack, and other ones comes together a little more quickly, and so I'm just going to work as fast as I can work well with a relatively small team because I like small teams better until you've got everything firmly figured out."

Bird reiterated that his biggest challenge this time around will be making sure The Incredibles doesn't trot over the same turf that other superhero films have, but this time around it'll be harder since there are a lot more superhero films than at time The Incredibles came out. "So we're trying to keep it focused in the area that our film was, which was a little bit more about characters and relationships and stuff like that, and see where that takes us," he added.

The Incredibles (2004) - In this lauded Pixar animated film, married superheroes Mr. Incredible (Craig T. Nelson) and Elastigirl (Holly Hunter) are forced to assume mundane lives as Bob and Helen Parr after all super-powered activities have been banned by the government. While Mr. Incredible loves his wife and kids, he longs to return to a life of adventure, and he gets a chance when summoned to an island to battle an out-of-control robot. Soon, Mr. Incredible is in trouble, and it's up to his family to save him.
