Star Wars Reads Day is an annual event that encourages fans around the world to read from their new or favorite Star Wars comics, novels, and activity books. This year's event, on October 10, 2015, falls during New York Comic Con, but that's just one of more than 1,000 events planned to celebrate around the world, USA Today reports.

The day isn't just about having fun; it's also meant to help promote literacy, something Jeanne Mosure, senior vice president and group publisher for Disney Publishing Worldwide is happy to support.

"The growth of this initiative globally is a true testament to the force of the Star Wars franchise and the importance of reading," she told USA Today. There are events across the US, plus Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, South Africa, Spain, and the UK.

Details on individual events can be found on the Star Wars Reads facebook page, but here are some signings that might be near you, courtesy of the paper.

  • New York Comic Con will be the home for several Star Wars Reads Day programming. On Oct. 10, Manhattan's Javits Center hosts signings with authors Daniel Wallace (Ultimate Star Wars) and Adam Bray (Star Wars: Absolutely Everything You Need to Know) plus a Journey to Star Wars: The Force Awakens panel with Bray, Chuck Wendig (Star Wars: Aftermath), Jason Fry (Star Wars in 100 Scenes), Claudia Gray, Greg Rucka, Pablo Hidalgo and Michael Siglain. And on Oct. 11, Wendig and Siglain will be two of the speakers at a Star Wars: A Galactic Reader's Theatre panel as part of the convention.
  • Also in New York City on Star Wars Reads Day is a signing with Cole Horton (Star Wars: Absolutely Everything You Need to Know) at Bank Street Bookstore while Books of Wonder hosts Star Wars authors Alexandra Bracken, Tom Angleberger, and Adam Gidwitz.
