The second episode of this season opens with Leroy and the other dwarves, desperate to get out of town now that the Savior, Emma, has become the Dark One. Dopey is the first to cross the Storybrooke border, which quickly turns him into a tree.

In a flashback to six weeks ago, we see what happened to Regina (Lana Parrilla) and the crew after they were welcomed into Camelot. Arthur reminds them of the prophecy, which states that the Savior will appear to save Merlin – who is also trapped in a tree. Using the Dagger to control Emma (Jennifer Morrison), Regina claims to be the Savior and vows to save Merlin. Later, she explains to Emma that her identity cannot be known, which is why she had to lie.

In the present, Emma tells Regina that they are all doomed, now that there is no Savior. She warns that Storybrooke has a new problem on the way, one that they will not be able to solve. Meanwhile, Arthur appears in Storybrooke, as well as many people fro Camelot, who were also cursed by Emma, now having no memories of the past six weeks.

Nearby, Hook (Colin O'Donoghue) and Emma finally talk for the first time since they arrived back in town. She teleports him to her house, and tells him that she still wants to be together. Devastated that true love's kiss doesn't fix her – Hook leaves. Soon after, while the others are working together and getting to know each other – some sort of smoky, demonic-looking fairy appears, swooping down and taking Robin with it. They chase it and try to stop it, but Regina isn't strong enough to defeat it.

Once again in the flashback, one of Arthur's men, Percival, brings Regina a special necklace to wear to the ball. She reveals later that she doesn't know how to dance, and she worries that they people will not believe her to be the savior. David (Josh Dallas) quickly teaches her how to dance to impress, without knowing that Percival has been watching them through a fire portal all this time – now knowing that Regina is not the Savior.

At the ball that night, Henry (Jared Gilmore) talks to a girl his age named Violet, impressing her with his other-worldly iPod. The night is going well, until Percival asks Regina to a dance. He remembers her as the Evil Queen, who destroye his village as a boy. Percival pulls out his sword to kill her, only to be stopped by Robin. David joins the fray as well, slaying Percival – after Robin has been possibly fatally wounded.

In the present again – Belle (Emilie de Ravin) does some research and learns that the creature that took Robin is a fury: a monster that takes the unpaid price of dark magic. In this instance, dark magic was used while they were in Camelot, and the price of that magic is a life. The only way to save Robin is to give another life in his place. Regina talks to Emma, asking her to call the fury off, but Emma reveals that it was actually Regina who summoned the fury during their time in Camelot.

The flashback continues, as Regina tries desperately to heal Robin. She realizes that the sword he was stabbed with was actually enchanged to kill her – which is why her magic has no effect on its wounds. She begs Emma to save Robin – and although "Rumple" appears to tell her that Regina will have to pay a price – Emma brings Robin back to life. Afterwards, Emma realizes that she enjoyed using dark magic and begins to grow worried.

In the present once again, Regina tracks down the fury and offers to be taken in Robin's place. The fury accepts this and starts to take Regina with it to the Underworld – before Mary Margaret (Ginnifer Goodwin), David, and Leroy join hands with Regina. They overpower the fury, sending it away and saving Robin, and it's in this moment that Regina realizes they believe in her and in her abilities.

Later, most of the characters are at Granny's, enjoying food and drink. Violet and Henry meet again, though they do not remember their meeting in Camelot. However, Violet recognizes the song that Henry played on his iPod when he plays it through the jukebox.

The flashback sequence ends when Regina admits to Arthur that she was the Evil Queen. He still believes her to be the Savior as well, since she "saved" Robin. Later, Queen Guinevere confides in Arthur that she is worried about what other trouble Regina and the others may bring. He reminds her that they have common goal: destroy the Dark One. Arthur needs the Dark One's dagger to complete Excalibur.

The episode ends in the present, with Emma alone in her home. She is visited again by the vision of Rumple, who leads her into her cavernous basement. He explains that the Dark One has always been bogged down by the light – family, old friends, and loves ones. However, she can snuff out the light by completing Excalibur with the dagger. He leads her to the Sword in the Stone, but she is unable to retrieve it. Of course, before she can just take the sword, there is a price for her to pay.
