Avengers: Age of Ultron is the most-nominated film - or anything - in the People's Choice Awards 2016 nominations, just released to the public today. Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson was nominated in three different categories, and out of the five nominees for "Favorite Movie Actor," only one - Johnny Depp - either hasn't played or isn't soon playing a comic book character, as Channing Tatum (Gambit), Chris Pratt (Star-Lord), Robert Downey, Jr. (Iron Man), and Will Smith (Deadshot) round out those five nominees. In the action category, all five are or will be comic book movie superheroes.
Jennifer Lawrence was missing from the People's Choice nominees this year, perhaps because her big tentpole film, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay part 2 doesn't drop until later this month.
On the TV side of things, The Walking Dead and Game of Thrones were nominated for overall favorite TV show. Gotham was nominated for Favorite Network TV Drama, going up against all three Shonda Rhimes shows, plus Empire. Yeah, good luck, Gotham - it's an honor to be nominated, right? Arrow was nominated in the almost too specific Network TV Sci-Fi/Fantasy Show category (against the likes of Once Upon a Time and Supernatural).
In a bit of a surprise, Daredevil was snubbed from the Favorite Streaming Series category despite nearly universal praise from critics and fans alike.
Supergirl and Heroes Reborn both came into the Favorite New TV Drama category, alongside nine other shows, two or three of which are already canceled.
Finally, in music, Carly Rae Jepsen was snubbed, which is a shame because she put out basically a perfect pop album this year (that has nothing to do with comics or genre entertainment, but it's true). There are also categories like "Favorite Social Media Star" and "The DailyMail.com Seriously Popular Award" that make me fear for humanity's future.
