BBC America has picked up the television adaptation of Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency, the comedic detective novel by Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy author Douglas Adams.

BBC America has ordered 8 episodes of the series, and Max Landis (American Ultra, Chronicle) is attached to write. The series will have Gently working his way through one madcap mystery per season.

"Dirk Gently is a very original series, fresh and unlike anything else," BBC America president Sarah Barnett said in a statement. "The novels have legions of fans, and with Max Landis' brilliant and audacious take on this material, we are excited to bring Dirk to life for our BBCA super-fans."

IDW is currently publishing an ongoing Dirk Gently comic book series, with a new mystery beginning in February.
