Director Zack Snyder has dropped another hint about the mysterious bigger bad waiting in the wings of Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, set to take on the assembled earth's champions in the Justice League movie.
Snyder hinted to the Daily Beast that this larger threat is tied somehow to the "mythology" of the monstrous villain Doomsday, who we got a first glimpse of in the latest trailer for Batman v. Superman.
"Well, you have Doomsday, right? He doesn't just crawl out of the ground," Snyder says. "He has his own mythology, right? So that has to be explored…"
You have to wonder if the "crawl out of the ground" remark was intentional on Snyder's part, since that's exactly what Doomsday did in his first appearance (Superman: The Man of Steel #17).
So who could Snyder be alluding to? In Doomsday's original incarnation, he was basically a Krptonian dinosaur – a ferocious predator who lived on Kypton before the humanoid Kryptonians inhabited it. He eventually went into space, wreaking havoc across the universe until a Green Lantern sacrificed himself to send the creature hurtling through space-time. Doomsday eventually crashed on Earth, landing so hard that was buried underground, where he remained until he eventually woke to battle Superman. Later, he would actually battle and defeat Darkseid, and become involved in the plans of Braniac, both of whom have been rumored to be involved with Warner Bros.' Justice League plans.
In the New 52 continuity, Doomsday attacked Krypton, but was defeated by Zod and banished to the Phantom Zone. Doomsday eventually made his way to Earth and battled Superman. It's been hinted that Zod may have created Doomsday himself as an enemy he could defeat to gain favor on Krypton.
Either origin seems to disrupt the common theory that Lex Luthor will create Doomsday in the DCEU around the events of Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, so perhaps there's more going on than we've been led to believe.
Check out when Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice and other movies are coming out in ComicBook.com's Movie Release Schedule.
