David Gaider, the lead writer of the Dragon Age series, is leaving developer BioWare after 17 years at the company.

Before taking on Dragon Age, Gaider worked on classic BioWare games like Baldur's Gate 2: Shadows of Aman, Star Wars: Knight of the Old Republic – specifically writing for fan favorite droid HK-47 – and Neverwinter Nights: Hordes of the Underdark.

In addition ot writing the Dragon Age games, Gaider also wrote the spinoff comics published by Dark Horse.

Gaider told Polygon that he was leaving BioWare amicably and of his own accord "to move onto a new challenge."

BioWare Canada's general manager, Aaryn Flynn, made an official statement concerning Gaider's departure via Twitter.

Dragon Age Inquisition was released in 2014, and topped many Game of the Year lists.
