Five Reasons You Need To Watch Colony
Earlier today, USA's new series Colony was renewed for a second season just three episodes into [...]
Carlton Cuse
Colony is the latest in a long line of shows and movies from expert producer Carlton Cuse.
Cuse is responsible for several in-production shows right now. Aside from Colony, he's also working on Bates Motel and The Returned. On the big screen, he has recently lent his talents to Dwayne Johnson's San Andreas and will be adapting the Rampage video game to big screen in the next couple of years.
Cuse is not only an absolute workhorse but he is a sci-fi genius. He is one of the minds behind LOST which many fans (including myself) will argue to the death is one of the greatest shows of all-time.
His magic touch on characters and mystery shines through on Colony.
prevnextJosh Holloway & Sarah Wayne Callies
Colony stars two of geek culture's favorite actors - Josh Holloway of LOST and Sarah Wayne Callies of Prison Break and The Walking Dead.
When first starting the show, it was easy to see the two actors as Sawyer and Lori from the show's I had known them best. However, they dive so deeply and seemlessly into their characters of Will Bowman, former super soldier, and Katie Bowman, undercover housewife, that any memory of their other characters is wiped from the screen. Watch the first episode all the way through and you'll see Callies has a hardcore inner bad-ass this time around.
Not to mention, the show also features Apollo Creed himself, Carl Weathers, as a laid back agent of the government with shades of Max Payne.
prevnextSci-Fi Action
Not too many shows on television are offering up high quality sci-fi stories. The only other show that comes to mind is Syfy's The Expanse which is vastly differently from Colony and currently on hiatus until 2017.
Colony doesn't need crazy special effects, explosion, and aliens to make viewers feel like they are engaged in some sci-fi drama. Instead, Cuse and the writers are crafting a mysterious tale which leaves us wondering who "the Hosts" are that invaded Earth and just what the heck "The Factory" is.
That said, Colony does offer a solid fix on visual effects with its drones, gun fights, and massive Donald Trump-approved wall secluding Los Angeles from the outside world.
prevnextIs The Resistance Bad?
Thanks to Star Wars and the loads of entertainment that followed its lead, my brain is trained to think the Resistance and Rebels are the good guys.
With Colony, it doesn't appear to be that simple. Hollway and Callies' characters are on opposite sides of the fence, though they don't tell one another, but it's not clear who is on the right side. Most of the time, they don't know, either.
Is the controlling government the bad guys because they storm in seemingly kidnap preselected citizens and send them off to the mysterious "Factory," or is the Resistance actually up to no good and the Red Hats truly need to stop them for the best interest of the people?
It's only one of the mysteries which the show will explore but for once we don't have to side with "The Resistance" just because they're called "The Resistance."
prevnextBest In The Time Slot
If for no other reason, you should watch Colony because it's the best show in its time slot.
What else is new Thursdays at 10 PM? Elementary and Shades of Blue might offer some crime fighting drama but they're not that mysterious sci-fi fix you need. Plus, Colony definitely takes presidence over Workaholics and Idiot Sitter. Everyone knows that however funny those shows may be, avoiding spoilers takes precedence.
Colony airs Thursdays at 10 PM ET on USA. Have you been watching?
