Director Roar Uthaug has been tasked with rebuilding Lara Croft when it comes to film, much like Crystal Dynamics did when it revitalized the fan-favorite heroine in their reboot a few years ago.

For his part, Uthaug (director of the upcoming disaster film The Wave) is a huge Tomb Raider fan from when the character made its debut, and has been a devoted fan ever since. He brings the same fierce female characters into his films.

"I've always been a fan of strong female characters," he added, "and I think I've had strong female characters in all my previous movies, so that's something I thought was interesting."

He also mentioned how he will similarly build on what makes Lara human, much like Crystal Dynamics did. He feels as if they did a masterful job getting to the core of the character, and he looks to follow suit.

"I think making Lara Croft feel like a real human being, that's definitely something we want to bring to the big screen as well," he said. "I think we'll want to make people relate to Lara as a character. I'm hoping to bring some of my Norwegian sensibilities to the franchise."

Aside from Tomb Raider's long video game lineage, he also looks to pull from a favorite of his childhood, Indiana Jones.

"Raiders of the Lost Ark was one of my favorite films growing up, so it's definitely a dream to work in that kind of genre," he remarked. "I think we'll want to make it feel like a modern action movie and to make what's going on feel like it's going on for real."

Uthaug has all the right intentions it seems, and I like the thinking behind it. I can't wait to see the Lara from her recent video game outings hit the big screen.
