Never doubt the power of nostalgia. During Nintendo's fiscal year presentation yesterday, the company revealed that its re-releases of Pokemon Red, Pokemon Blue, Pokemon Yellow and Pokemon Green were among the company's (few) high points during its 2015 fiscal year. The four games (one of which was only released in Japan) have sold over 1.5 million copies, over half of which were to American fans. "Since the start of the calendar year, Pokémon has been the subject of much attention in America, and sales are showing a favorable trend," said Nintendo president Tatsumi Kimishima during the presentation.

The Pokemon re-releases were the fourth most downloaded game for Nintendo last year, losing only to the Wii U and 3DS versions of Super Smash Bros. and DLC related to Mario Kart 8. That's despite being on the market for only two months...and the games being twenty years old. It helps that Pokemon caught in the Virtual Console versions can be transferred to the upcoming Pokemon Sun and Pokemon Moon titles, out this holiday season.

Nintendo is relying on the Pokemon franchise to help carry it through 2016. Pokemon Sun and Pokemon Moon are among the company's only major releases this year as it preps for the release of its "NX" console out next spring.
