20th Century Fox has released a new featurette based around the final showdown of Independence Day: Resurgence which was filmed in the Utah Salt Flats.

"It's an other worldly, gorgeous kind of thing," Independence Day star Jeff Goldblum says of the Utah Salt Flats.

"This time, we use it as our last showdown," director Roland Emmerich explains. "We go much grander scale. It will be the perfect spot to create the sequence."

"In the Salt Flats, you can drive as far as you want and never get there," jokes Judd Hirsch.

After Independence Day redefined the event movie genre, the next epic chapter delivers global spectacle on an unimaginable scale. Using recovered alien technology, the nations of Earth have collaborated on an immense defense program to protect the planet. But nothing can prepare us for the aliens' advanced and unprecedented force. Only the ingenuity of a few brave men and women can bring our world back from the brink of extinction.

While many of the original cast members are returning from the 1996 Independence Day film, Resurgence will feature a largely new cast, as well. Emmerich describes the new additions as a "passing the torch" type of scenario. While talking to ComicBook.com about Will Smith's choice of not returning to the franchise for its first sequel, he said the only way to replace him was not as a single character or actor but as an entire generation.
