The heroes of Marvel Studios have already conquered the worldwide box office for 2016, earlier this week becoming the highest grossing film of the year (so far). Today, though, Captain America: Civil War will pass the $1 billion mark.

It's the first billion dollar box office draw of the year, despite other blockbusters like Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice having been released much earlier in the year. Disney also has the #2 film of the year with Zootopia at just under a billion - $974.9 million, and the #4 film with The Jungle Book, which is sitting behind BvS, and will likely end its run in fourth place (though it's conceivable that Korea and Japan, where it has yet to launch, could give it the extra 38 million it needs to hit third).

It's the 24th day of Captain America's release in foreign markets, and only the 15th day of its domestic release. This weekend sees the debut of Angry Birds and Neighbors 2, which will take some of the box office momentum away from Civil War, but the first real test will be next week, when Disney's own Alice Through the Looking Glass and fellow Marvel Comics based film X-Men: Apocalypse hit theaters.

The Disney juggernaut is going to be hard to defeat this summer as a whole, at least for the start of it, as three weeks later it releases Finding Dory, and The BFG three after. The next Marvel Studios film will be Doctor Strange, opening up the magical side of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
