When audiences finally get to see Jared Leto in action as The Joker in Suicide Squad, they're in for quite a ride according to Leto and Director David Ayer.

The cast has experienced quite a ride themselves, as Leto is always decidedly method in his roles, and The Joker was no different. Whether it was live rats, dead pigs, or creepy wicker baskets, the actor has kept the crew of Suicide Squad on their toes.

In an interview with Total Film (via DigitalSpy), the actor revealed just how bad The Joker is, and where he ranks in the villain food chain, saying: "The only villain who may be more infamous is the devil."

The actor enjoys that aspect about him, though, adding: "The Joker is an icon, a legend, the baddest of the bad and seems to be having the most fun. I knew I was going to have to dive deep and go to a place I had never gone before."

The good news is David Ayer knew what he was in store for (okay, maybe not all of it) before they started filming. He talked about one of their early exchanges, saying: "We sat outside his house and talked and it was clear he wanted to make something really different. He wanted to break some rules, and that's very compelling. I got the sense he was on a mission. This wasn't just a movie for him."

To follow in an iconic performance like Heath Ledgers turn as the Joker in The Dark Knight, you have to be willing to take some chances and go all in, and that's exactly what Leto has decided to do.

Suicide Squad releases on August 5th.
