It looks like residents of Kentucky's Cynthiana are preparing for their very own apocalypse as a new, zombiefied mural is about to enter the city.

With The Walking Dead wowing fans over its past six seasons, the small Southern town is now doing what it can to honor the hit show with a giant mural. Sergie Odeith, a Portuguese artist, is heading the project as he famously created a Louis Armstrong mural in Lexington, Kentucky just last year. Work on this newest piece began earlier last week as Odeith and his team started outlining the mural's four main figures: Sheriff Rick Grimes, Carl, Michonne, and Daryl Dixon.

For those of you wondering why the city chose to celebrate The Walking Dead, it's because the famous franchise originated in Cynthiana years ago. Before the comic book's creator were fleshing out zombie nightmares, they were locals of the town. Both Robert Kirkman and Tony Moore hail from Cynthiana and created The Walking Dead before its comic was picked up by Image Comics.

The mural is set to finish ahead of a city-wide celebration in Cynthiana for the show. Kirkman even plans to return to his hometown later in August to visit with fans during 'Walking Dead Day' and pay a visit to the work of art.

Painted on the city's local theater, Cynthiana Arts Council fundraised tirelessly to make their Walking Dead mural happen. Emily Ammerman, a board member on the council, hopes that the mural will inspire future artists. She said, "We wanted this first mural to really make a statement...And it's great to honor the Walking Dead, because it has been such a big hit and people here are proud of the local connections."

The Walking Dead currently airs on AMC and has become one of the most watched TV shows in the country with its action and gore thrilling (and disgusting) fans everywhere. The series' sixth season finished this past April, and fans are already anticipating season seven as The Walking Dead promises its newest villain, Negan, will shock fans when it returns this Fall.
