Paul Feig's female-driven Ghostbusters reboot opened in theaters this past weekend, and even though it is still too early tell, its mixed results have left many to wonder whether or not it deserves a sequel.

While Ghostbusters grossed a respectable $46 million, giving it the biggest opening for a live-action comedy in over a year (topping Ted 2's 33.5 million opening in June 2015), it still finished in second-place behind The Secret Life Of Pets, which pulled in $50.56 million in its second frame. But more importantly, Ghostbusters reportedly cost $150 million to produce (not counting marketing), so it still has a long way to go to get in the black, and when you factor in that American comedies don't usually do as well overseas, the domestic box office has to do a lot of the heavy lifting.

Plus, the 'B+' CinemaScore it received from moviegoers isn't the type of score that generates exceptional word-of-mouth, giving it the legs it needs.

Nevertheless, a Sony executive basically came out and declared a sequel will happen, even though he stressed that it wasn't an official announcement.

"The Ghostbusters world is alive and well," Rory Bruer, president of worldwide distribution at Sony Pictures Entertaiment, told The Wrap. "I expect Ghostbusters to become an important brand and franchise." He added, "While nothing has been officially announced yet, there's no doubt in my mind it will happen."

Ghostbusters makes its long-awaited return, rebooted with a cast of hilarious new characters. Thirty years after the beloved original franchise took the world by storm, director Paul Feig brings his fresh take to the supernatural comedy, joined by some of the funniest actors working today – Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, Leslie Jones, and Chris Hemsworth. This summer, they're here to save the world!

The film is directed by Paul Feig (The Heat, Bridesmaids), written by Feig and Katie Dippold, and produced by Ivan Reitman and Amy Pascal. Feig, Jessie Henderson, Tom Pollock, Joe Medjuck, Ali Bell, Michele Imperato Stabile, and Dan Aykroyd are its executive producers. The cast features Melissa McCarthy (Tammy), Kristen Wiig (Saturday Night Live), Kate McKinnon (Saturday Night Live), Leslie Jones (Saturday Night Live), Charles Dance (Game of Thrones), Michael Kenneth Williams (Boardwalk Empire), Neil Casey (Adult Beginners), Elizabeth Perkins (Big), and Chris Hemsworth (Thor). The film will feature cameos from Bill Murray (Groundhog Day), Dan Aykroyd (Spies Like Us), Sigourney Weaver (Alien), Ernie Hudson (The Crow), Annie Potts (Designing Women), and Ozzy Osbourne.

Ghostbusters is now playing!
