Phishing Website Targets Pokemon Go Players

A new phishing scheme is targeting Pokemon Go players with the promise of Legendary Pokemon. The website "PokemonPromo.com" (we're not linking to it for obvious reasons) claims to be a legitimate site connected to Pokemon Go and advertises "new technology" that will allow players to unlock Legendary Pokemon. In order to collect "Legendary Stardust" that can be used to purchase "Legendary Lure Modules" and other items, the site asks players to share the link to the site. However, once players collect enough Legendary Stardust, the site instead asks players to fill out a survey in order to ensure they aren't a bot.

Collecting personal information while posing as a legitimate website is a hallmark of phishing scams, but the site has still been shared thousands of times on Twitter, Facebook, and Reddit by players hoping to unlock Legendary Pokemon. Phishers previously targeted Pokemon Go players by claiming that Nintendo was going to start charging to play the game, a scheme that briefly fooled the entertainment site Deadline.

Niantic Labs recently confirmed that Legendary Pokemon won't be introduced until the game is released globally, so don't believe any website, offer, or player that claims otherwise.
