Today is Michael Shannon's birthday.

Shannon made his big-screen debut in Groundhog Day, the 1993 classic comedy that was directed by Harold Ramis and starred Bill Murray. Shannon played Fred, one half of the newlyweds who went bonkers when Phil Connors gifted them Wrestlemania tickets.

However, Shannon didn't land on people's radar until he played Kim Basinger's sleazy boyfriend in 2002's 8 Mile, which starred rapper-turned-actor Eminem. Six years later, Shannon would receive an Academy Award nomination in the Best Supporting Actor category for his performance in Revolutionary Road.

Two years later, Shannon nabbed a key role in Martin Scorsese's Boardwalk Empire, playing the off-kilter Nelson Van Alden in 35 episodes, spanning four seasons.

In 2013, Shannon became a household name when director Zack Snyder cast him in Man of Steel. He, of course, played General Zod, the Kryptonian villain that went toe-to-toe with Henry Cavill's Superman. Sadly, Superman snapped his neck. Though, it wouldn't be the last time we saw Zod in the DCEU, as his corpse appeared in Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice and was used by Lex Luthor to create Doomsday.

Shannon's other notable projects include The Iceman, Bad Boys II, and Jonah Hex.

Born in Lexington, Kentucky, Michael Shannon turns 42 today. Happy Birthday, Michael Shannon.
