Hugh Hefner Is Getting A 13-Episode Docuseries From Amazon

Hugh Hefner will be the subject of an original docuseries from Amazon for the company's Prime Video service. The company greenlighted the 13-episode series, to be titled American Playboy: The Hugh Hefner Story, which will give viewers unprecedented access to more than 17,000 hours of footage and 2,600-plus scrapbooks from the personal archives of Hugh Hefner himself, according to Deadline.

The series will tell the story of the American icon and the Playboy brand that he created. The story will begin in postwar America, and will chronicle the launch of the Playboy magazine in 1953 all the way through the next six decades of Hefner's career and life. 90-year-old Hefner has been deeply involved in the production of the upcoming documentary, and the story will be told in his own words.

Hefner said in a statement: "It has been a long road in finding the right partners to tell the full story of Playboy as it has unfolded over these past 63 years, and I believe we have found them in the collaborative team of Stephen David Entertainment and Amazon."

He continued, "I'm pleased that this docuseries will shed light on what has been an incredible journey and the voice Playboy has had in the discussion of our ever-changing culture. Just as importantly, my hope is that it will inspire others to pursue their dreams.

The series will be produced by Stephen David Entertainment and Alta Loma Entertainment and will premiere next year in the U.S., UK, Germany, Austria and Japan.

The Head of Unscripted at Amazon Studios, Conrad Riggs, stated: "Although Hugh Hefner is an iconic figure known worldwide, most people may not be aware of the impact he has had on some of this country's most important social revolutions. We are excited to bring Prime members the untold story of Mr. Hefner's remarkable life and his contributions to modern American history."
