In Star Trek's first series, a total of 79 episodes were broadcast which continue to intrigue sci-fi fans even today. The original series of course stands as one of Star Trek's most enduring productions as the show kicked off the much-beloved franchise. And, now, a new interview with the late Leonard Nimoy shows the actor discussing which Star Trek episode stands as his favorite.

The exclusive clip comes courtesy of IGN from the History Channel's 2-hour documentary, 50 Years of Star Trek. The upcoming special will celebrate the series' long pop culture history and collect numerous interviews from Star Trek alumnus like Whoopie Goldberg, Nichelle Nichols, J.J. Abrams, Simon Pegg, and more. The documentary will also include one of Nimoy's final full-length interviews prior to his death, allowing fans one more look into the legendary actor's thoughts.

So, when the actor was asked about his favorite Star Trek episodes, Nimoy had plenty of thoughts to share.

The actor revealed that "Devil in the Dark" is one of his favorite Star Trek episodes, saying, "I thought was a wonderful episode about the fear of the unknown - how we fear and even hate something that we don't know anything about."

Nimoy went on to explain that the episode taught viewers to, "learn who you're enemy is" because then fans would learn their enemies might not actually be a threat.

More than ever, the episode's message of tolerance is one many would surely love to hear these days. For those unfamiliar with "Devil in the Dark," the episode follows Captain Kirk and Spock as they search for a dangerous monster who's killed miners on the planet Janus VI. However, the duo come to discover the monster is anything but violent as the Horta life-form explains it only killed those miners in self-defense. To protect its eggs and ensure the Horta race would live on, the alien then works alongside Captain Kirk and Spock to peacefully co-habitate with the citizens of Janus VI.

Many fans, including William Shatner himself, have praised the episode's rich and complex material. And, surely, "Devil in the Dark" aligns with Brannon Braga's (The Next Generation, Voyager) thoughts on what makes an excellent Star Trek episode.

"A truly great Star Trek episode in my opinion has a list of ingredients," he explained. "It's an equation, and that equation includes a high concept that provides cool character dynamics and conflict but also is a parable that has some deeper theme."

If you want to watch 50 Years of Star Trek, the special is set to air on History at 8/7c on August 14th.
