It looks like the Suicide Squad's reach with fans is going beyond making it the number one movie in theaters; it's also looking like it'll hit number one on the Billboard charts. The soundtrack for the film is on track for a 130,00-140,000 total this week, after being released last week alongside the film. The chart will be released on Sunday, most likely showing this at #1.

If it does take the top spot, it would be the first soundtrack to hit #1 in about a year, since Disney's Descendants, a TV movie soundtrack that opened at #1 on August 22, 2015. The last big-screen soundtrack to be tops was Pitch Perfect 2 on May 30, 2015.

The soundtrack features new tracks and classic songs in a unique mix. Twenty One Pilots debuted their new single early, a couple weeks before the soundtrack was released, and Skylar Grey wrote two new songs (and sang one) for the album. Throw in some classic covers like "Bohemian Rhapsody" covered by Panic! At The Disco and "You Don't Own Me" covered by Grace and G-Eazy, and the soundtrack album is an eclectic mix that is landing well with fans.

Music has become a large part of the conversation with superhero stories, largely since Guardians of the Galaxy made classic rock a hit again with their "Awesome Mix Vol. 1," and the way music was heavily integrated into the scene work in the film (director James Gunn actually piped the soundtrack songs over loudspeakers while the actors were shooting!). The Luke Cage trailers for the new Marvel/Netflix show have likewise been getting a lot of musical attention, with soul legend Adrian Younge and A Tribe Called Quest's Ali Shaheed Muhammad composing music for the show with guest performances by R&B and hip-hop artists like Raphael Saadiq, Faith Evans, Method Man, and more when it hits at the end of next month.

Suicide Squad is in theaters now. The soundtrack is available at all major retailers, and for listen on Spotify.
