Watchmen: Doctor Manhattan Inspired Oor Wullie Statue Is Up For Auction

To celebrate the 80th anniversary of the Scottish comic strip Oor Wullie and to raise money for a good cause, over a hundred uniquely designed 5ft statues of Wullie, the strip's mischievous title character, were created by local and international artists. They have been on display, but today, 70 of those sculptures will be auctioned off. Proceeds from the auction will go to the creation of two brand new children operating theatres at Tayside Children's Hospital.

While I'm sure the Iron Man, David Bowie, and Harry Potter inspired statues will see plenty of action, I especially like the Doctor Manhattan inspired sculpture. It was designed by Watchmen co-creator Dave Gibbons, and he commissioned Aberdeenshire-based ceramicist Sarah Coonan to create it. By the way: Gibbons also signed the sculpture.

A complex, multi-layered mystery adventure, Watchmen is set in an alternate 1985 America in which costumed superheroes are part of the fabric of everyday society, and the "Doomsday Clock" - which charts the USA's tension with the Soviet Union - is permanently set at five minutes to midnight. When one of his former colleagues is murdered, the washed-up but no less determined masked vigilante Rorschach sets out to uncover a plot to kill and discredit all past and present superheroes. As he reconnects with his former crime-fighting legion - a ragtag group of retired superheroes, only one of whom has true powers - Rorschach glimpses a wide-ranging and disturbing conspiracy with links to their shared past and catastrophic consequences for the future. Their mission is to watch over humanity...but who is watching the Watchmen?

Director by Zack Snyder and written by Alex Tse and David Hayter, based on Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons's Hugo Award-winning 12-issue comic book series (1986 – 1987) of the same name.

The cast featured Malin Akerman, Billy Crudup, Matthew Goode, Carla Gugino, Jackie Earle Haley, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, and Patrick Wilson.
