As December draws closer, fans of Doctor Who are growing more excited to see the series' annual Christmas special. The long-awaited episode is being headed up by writer Steven Moffat who has said the special will have plenty of heart, brain - and superheroes? According to reports, it looks like the Doctor might be going up, up, and away with two companions come December.

RadioTimes has recently reported Doctor Who will introduce one heroic character to its Christmas line-up. Justin Chatwin will guest star as a "superhero character" on the series. The site understands that the actor will be a "brash figure with an American accent" and hold onto a "few dark interstellar secrets of one sort of another."

The special will also see another companion work alongside the Doctor, and he'll be familiar to most fans. Matt Lucas will reprise his role of Nardole who will play a major role in the episode.

Of course, many viewers were already aware that the actor would be bringing Nardole back to Doctor Who. News broke earlier this summer that the character would star in Season 10. Fans last saw Nardole in "The Husbands of River Song" where the lovable figure found his head transferred to a robotic body.

The returning actor will be joined next season by a new face who fans are very excited to see. A new companion will come to Doctor Who by way of Pearl Mackie who's playing Bill. She will take over a spot previously held by Jenna Coleman who played Clara Oswald, the companion of both the Eleventh and Twelfth Doctors. Mackie will be absent from the Christmas special and save her introduction for the premiere episode of Season 10.

The BBC has not commented on the superhero speculation, but fans seem to be all for the comic book character. The role will undoubtedly be an original one created by Moffat. After all, the famed showrunner is a vocal comic book reader and seems more than capable of cooking up a hero (and also a gyro).

Currently, there's no confirmed release date for Season 10 of Doctor Who, but sources believe the show will return in Spring 2017. The first episode will be written by Moffat and directed by Lawrence Gough. The following episode will be penned by Frank Cottrell-Boyce.
