Six New Comics Series to Check Out in October
Every week, thousands of comics readers venture into their local store to scan the shelves for a [...]
Champions
The Team: Mark Waid, Humberto Ramos
What's It About: Arguably the flagship series of the new Marvel NOW! line, Champions is a new Marvel series about the newest generation of teen superheroes. Champions follows the adventures of Ms. Marvel, Nova, and Spider-Man (Miles Morales) as they start their own superhero team in the aftermath of (the still-ongoing) Civil War II. Joining their team of upstarts is Viv Vision from Tom King's masterful Vision series, the time-displaced teen version of Cyclops, and Amadeus Cho, the Totally Awesome Hulk.
Why We're Excited: Marvel is pushing Champions as its next "big" book, in part because of the top notch creative team. Waid and Ramos's first collaboration together was the great DC series Impulse, which also starred a spunky, rebellious teen hero. Since then, Waid has established himself as one of the top superhero writers in the business, while Ramos's energetic art style has graced the pages of books like The Avengers: Initiative, Amazing Spider-Man, and Runaways. Bringing the two creators back together could be gold for Marvel, especially as they're trying to define their next wave of superheroes.
When It Comes Out: October 5th.
prevnextCave Carson Has a Cybernetic Eye
The Team: Jon Rivera, Gerard Way, Michael Avon Oeming
What's It About: Cave Carson was once a world-famous spelunker, but retired with his wife when their daughter went off to college. However, after his wife falls ill and dies, Carson tries to pull his life back together when underground adventure starts calling him to action once again.
Why We're Excited: DC's new Young Animal line rolls on in October with two new series, the aforementioned Cave Carson and Shade the Changing Girl. Both look offbeat and original, but we're a little more excited about Cave Carson because of Michael Oeming's amazing artwork. Oeming co-created the hit superhero/crime procedural series Powers with Brian Bendis and also co-created Mice Templar with Bryan JL Glass. Plus, this is a book about a spelunker with a cybernetic eye! What's not to love about that?

prevnextMidnighter and Apollo
The Team: Steve Orlando, Fernando Blanco
What's It About: DC's power couple is back in action. Rising DC star Steve Orlando returns to write a new Midnighter adventure, although this time he's teaming up with his ex-partner Apollo to fight Henry Bendix, a classic Wildstorm character better known as the Weatherman.
Why We're Excited: Orlando's Midnighter series was one of the best superhero comics of the last couple of years, so we're excited to see him back to write the violent vigilante for at least a few more issues. Plus, there's a lot of history between Midnighter and Apollo that hasn't really been explored in the rebooted/merged DC universe, so we're hoping that Orlando can bring back one of the best relationships in comics.

prevnextDeadman: Dark Mansion of Forbidden Love
The Team: Sarah Vaughn, Lan Medina
What's It About: Deadman returns for a prestige miniseries involving a love triangle, a woman who can see the dead, and sinister secrets lurking within a haunted gothic mansion.
Why We're Excited: Whoever approved a gothic romance/horror story involving Deadman needs to be given a raise. This could be the most innovative and out of the box "superhero" comic to come out in 2016. Sarah Vaughn has co-created some great romance comics, including Image's Alex + Ada and Rosy Press's Ruined and should do a fantastic job bringing some creepy romance to the world of DC Comics. If you liked Crimson Peak, you'll probably love this 3 issue oversized series.

prevnextReborn
The Team: Mark Millar, Greg Capullo
What's It About: The superstar team of Mark Millar and Greg Capullo team up with an innovative new concept on the afterlife. When a woman from our world dies, she's sent not to heaven or hell, but to a strange fantasy land where she must fight for survival
Why We're Excited: Mark Millar has found a niche in recent years, and that's recruiting top-tier artists to work with him on entertaining (and movie-friendly) comics miniseries. Greg Capullo, who just finished a critically acclaimed run on Batman with Scott Snyder, is Millar's newest partner and guarantees that Reborn will be one of the most gorgeous comics on the shelf. We're suckers for stories set in the afterlife, even if that afterlife involves swords and magic.
When It Comes Out: October 12th
prevnextJessica Jones
The Team: Brian Bendis, Michael Gaydos
What's It About: Jessica Jones is back as a private eye with her very own series. We don't know much about her new caseload, but we do know it involves an pleasant trip to a max security prison (as a prisoner, not a visitor) and some unsavory secrets from her past.
Why We're Excited: Brian Bendis and Michael Gaydos originally created Jessica Jones way back in 2001. Now, Marvel is reuniting the pair for a new solo series pulling Jones away from her busy home life and back into the world of superpowered sleuthing. Thanks to the Netflix television series, Jones has never been more popular and now is the perfect time for her to get her very own comics series.
