The best villains are the ones you can identify with, at least on a base principle level. Sure you might not agree in their methods of achieving their goal, but when villains adopt a whatever means necessary attitude, you can at least understand why.

For Doctor Strange, director Scott Derrickson is going a similar route with his villain Kaecilius, who is being brought to life by the talented Mads Mikkelsen. In a recent Reddit Q&A, Derrickson was asked about his take on the relatively obscure character from the comics, and how it stacks up to other villains in the Marvel cinematic universe.

"What I wanted was a villain driven by a compelling agenda. He is a man of ideas. He has a cogent, defendable point of view, which is what I always find interesting in antagonists and villains."

If Derrickson can deliver a grounded villain who's end goals are somewhat relatable, he will have added another strong piece to the Marvel's film universe, which has struggled in that department. Loki seems to be the lone Marvel villain who has made as big an impact as the heroes he faces, but hopes are also high for Josh Brolin's Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War.

Before long Strange – armed with newly acquired magical powers – is forced to choose whether to return to his life of fortune and status or leave it all behind to defend the world as the most powerful sorcerer in existence.
