Benedict Cumberbatch Wore His Doctor Strange Costume Into A New York Cafe

In April, while filming Marvel's Doctor Strange in New York City, Benedict Cumberbatch dropped by a local comic book store while still wearing his superhero costume, and recently revealed, he also wore the outfit while going to a Manhattan café.

While many of us would naturally assume the customers and employees at the café were overcome with excitement, the Sherlock star says that neither his presence nor his costume got much of a response. Of course, these are New Yorkers were talking about, so it takes quite a bit to get them excited.

Cumberbatch compares their lack of interest to how people reacted in that memorable and hilarious scene in Ghostbusters (1984), where accountant-turned-Keymaster Louis Tully (played by Rick Moranis) was getting chased by a Terror Dog and desperately sought help from the Tavern on the Green patrons.

"I had some friends who were around on Saturday and they were like, 'Wow, oh my god, you're actually playing a superhero!'" he recalled to EW. "I said, 'Let's go to a cafe,' and we went to this cafe around the corner. And you know that scene in Ghostbusters where Rick Moranis runs up to the cafe in Central Park, being chased by the Dog of Doom from the building? And he goes, 'Help me, help!' and bangs against the glass? And everyone in the restaurant sort of drops their cutlery and turns their head and looks? And he squeaks down the glass going, 'Please, help me?' And there's a silence? And you cut back to the dining room and everyone goes, 'Anyway, I was saying, Marjorie just had her face done…' That's pretty much what happened in the cafe. By the time I left, it was like, 'Hey, thanks so much, here's a tip!' It was just a normal thing."

The cast features Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock, Star Into Darkness, The Imitation Game), Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years a Slave), Rachel McAdams (Sherlock Holmes), Michael Stuhlbarg (A Serious Man), Mads Mikkelsen (Casino Royale) and Tilda Swinton (The Grand Budapest Hotel).

The film is directed by Scott Derrickson (Sinister) and written by Derrickson, Jon Spaihts (Prometheus), and C. Robert Cargill (Sinister).
