The first character posters for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story were released by Lucasfilm Monday afternoon. The posters feature Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones), Captain Cassian Andor (Diego Luna), Director Orson Krennic (Ben Mendelsohn), Chirrut Îmwe (Donnie Yen), K-2SO (Alan Tudyk), Bodhi Rook (Riz Ahmed), Baze Malbus (Jiang Wen) and Saw Gerrera (Forest Whitaker).
The character posters feature each of the people (or the droid) with the Death Star blueprints projected upon their faces, and everyone looking suitably serious in their image. Chirrut Îmwe's blind eyes can be easily distinguished in his image, and these are the closest looks we've gotten yet at K-2SO and Director Krennic.
It's interesting to note that six of the posters feature heads turned to the left: Jyn, Krennic, Îmwe, K-2SO, Andor, and Gerrera. Bodhi Rook, however, is turned opposite, to the right, and Baze Malbus is completely centered in his image, looking directly forward. While it's unclear what this could mean, Lucasfilm is usually so specific about their choice of imagery, it would be hard to think this is an accident. We know that Baze Malbus doesn't believe in the Force, despite his companion Chirrut's devotion to it; could this be some indicator? It's hard to say, but something worth looking at again once the movie hits theaters.
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, directed by Gareth Edwards, debuts in theaters on December 16, 2016. The first of the new stand-alone Star Wars movies planned for even year release, this movie tells the story of the group of Rebels who steal the Death Star plans directly prior to the first Star Wars movie, Episode IV: A New Hope. The episodic "Skywalker Saga" films revived with last year's smash hit Star Wars: The Force Awakens will continue in 2017 with Star Wars: Episode VIII (not final title), and release in odd years.
