In the world of online fandoms, you either ship or you sink. That is, you either find two characters who you hope will fall in love (i.e. relationship) or be a very sad fan. When it comes to comic books, readers have been shipping characters for decades now, but there are those couples who stand above the rest. One of those relationships belong to Aquaman and Mera, and the director James Wan is promising those heroes will have plenty of on-screen chemistry.

According to Bustle, Wan says he has a grand romantic plan in wait for Aquaman and Mera. He likened the solo Aquaman flick to Raiders of the Lost Ark and Romancing the Stone, saying, "I really want to get the classic action-adventure-romance aspect through that, and I think that's kind of fun."

"It starts off initially with them not quite clicking with each other," Wan continued. "But then as the story progresses as they learn to try and work together, they get closer and closer. I think those stories are always such a great place for a filmmaker like myself to have fun with my actors."

The director went on to speak about Amber Heard's work as Mera specifically. Describing her character as "super strong," Wan said he feels like the dynamic between Aquaman and Mera is an interesting one because of her power. He half-joked, "You don't wanna mess with her."

"I think Amber will bring that sense of strength, but at the same time, we also want someone who has a sort of feminine quality to her as well. She's a bit of a contrast to Momoa, who's more of a muscular machine almost," Wan finished.

There's no doubt that fans will be excited to see Jason Momoa show off his gloriously toned abs when Aquaman debuts. The actor has flaunted his physique through social media lately, and Momoa promises his bulging muscles will be front and center when Justice League hits theaters. After all, Aquaman is said to have both brawn and brains - and Momoa has both of those in spades.

Fans have also grown increasingly excited to see Mera swim into the DC Extended Universe. Warner Bros. and DC Films recently released their first images of Amber Heard as the Queen of Atlantis via IGN. The production photo was taken by Zack Snyder himself while Justice League was still filming. It is said that Mera will play a supporting role in the ensemble flick, but her role will expand in Aquaman when she becomes its female lead.

So far, Momoa and Heard are the only actors who've been confirmed for the anticipated Aquaman flick. Recently, rumors began flying that Michael K. Williams had been cast to play Black Manta for the film, but Wan quickly debunked them on Twitter. While many fans are still hopeful that Black Manta will debut in the film, ComicBook.com's Russ Burlingame says the character's casting announcement would only come after plenty of industrial hype.

"If there's anything fans and the press like better on a slow news day than casting rumors, it's casting rumors about actors from The Wire," Burlingame says. "Would Williams kill it in this role? Almost certainly, but he's also a Community veteran, which means he should by all rights be making cameos in Captain America movies instead. You'll know it when a role as big as this has been cast for real."

Aquaman is scheduled to hit theaters on July 27, 2018 while Justice League opens in theaters on Nov. 17, 2017.
