Charlie Cox Says Marvel Can Kill Characters Off At Any Moment

While some characters have cheated death on the Netflix series Marvel's Daredevil, others haven't been so lucky. The most notable and shocking death has to be Ben Urich's (portrayed by Vondie Curtis-Hall), who was savagely beaten to death in the first season at the hands of Wilson Fisk (a.k.a. The Kingpin).

Charlie Cox, the star of Daredevil, believes that death made it clear to viewers that nobody is safe. "I know that as a show, they don't try to take storylines that are already written," Cox told the crowd last weekend at Wizard World Pittsburgh (via screengeek) We want to be our own thing. One of the reasons they killed Ben Urich, which was such a great shock for me, but the reason I think they do it because the people who love the show are great fans and have read the comics and we need them to know this is not a safe place and the drama is going to affect you as well. You don't know what's going to happen. If we kill Ben Urich, what does that mean? We could to anything potentially."

Marvel's The Defenders follows Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist. A quartet of singular heroes with one common goal - to save New York City. This is the story of four solitary figures, burdened with their own personal challenges, who realize they just might be stronger when teamed together.

The 8-episode limited series will star Charlie Cox as Daredevil, Krysten Ritter as Jessica Jones, Mike Colter as Luke Cage, Finn Jones as Iron Fist, Elodie Yung as Elektra, and Sigourney Weaver (Aliens) playing a significant but unspecified role. The cast also includes Deborah Ann Woll as Karen Page, Simone Missick as Misty Knight, Rachel Taylor as Trish Walker, Scott Glenn as Stick, Rosario Dawson as Claire Temple, Elden Henson as Foggy Nelson, Eka Darville as Malcolm, and Carrie-Ann Moss as Jeri Hogarth.

Douglas Petrie (Marvel's Daredevil, Buffy the Vampire Slayer), Marco Ramirez (Marvel's Daredevil, Orange is the New Black), Drew Goddard (The Martian, Lost, Alias), and Jeph Loeb, head of Marvel Television, will serve as Executive Producers on Marvel's The Defenders. The series is produced by Marvel Television in association with ABC Studios for Netflix.

Acclaimed film and television director S.J. Clarkson (Marvel's Jessica Jones, Orange is the New Black), will direct the first two episodes and also serve as an Executive Producer on the premiere episode.
