In the Marvel Universe, there are plenty of villains who come off a sympathetic. Recently, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has done wonders in making Loki a tragic villain, but there are not many readers who would say Doctor Doom is the same. The years have not been kind to the megalomaniac, but there is one man who steadfastly remains in the villain's corner - and that would be Stan Lee.

During a recent interview, the legendary writer said he didn't think it was fair for Doctor Doom to be called a villain. In fact, Lee said said he would like to clear the villain's name.

When Lee was asked who his favorite supervillain is, the comic creator said, "I think maybe Doctor Doom. Now, I'll tell you why: Everybody has Doctor Doom misunderstood. Everybody thinks he's a criminal, but all he wants is to rule the world. Now, if you really think about it objectively, you could just walk up to a police officer and you could say, 'Excuse me, officer? I want to rule the world.' He can't arrest you. It's not a crime to want to rule the world."

He continued, saying, "It's unfair that he's considered a villain. He just wants to rule the world and maybe he could do a better job of it. So, I'm very interested in Doctor Doom, and I'd like to clear his name."

While it may seem counterintuitive, Lee does have a point. It's not a crime to wish for world domination; You can't be detained for dreaming about global dictatorship. However, you can be jailed for things such as murder and political tyranny, and those are the things Doctor Doom is known for. The character could have retained his impractical dreams without becoming a villain, but Doctor Doom's blind violence is what makes him a feared villain in the Marvel universe.

If you are not familiar with Doctor Doom, then you should know the villain was created by Jack Kirby and Stan Lee in the 1960s. The character first appeared in The Fantastic Four #5 and quickly became known as the group's de facto nemesis. Doctor Doom lived through a rough childhood wherein his parents were killed. His mother was killed by the demon Mephisto after calling upon him for power while Doom's father was murdered by King Vladimer of Latveria after he failed to save the ruler's wife.
