The Flash: Easter Eggs and Other Things You Might Have Missed In "Killer Frost"
Tonight on The Flash, Kevin Smith brought his signature touch back to The CW and, among other [...]
KEVIN SMITH
Filmmaker Kevin Smith, one of Hollywood's most famous geeks and the star of Comic Book Men and Geeking Out, directed this episode of The Flash.
Last season, Smith directed "The Runaway Dinosaur," the penultimate episode of the season, and in a few weeks he'll have an episode of Supergirl on the air as well (titled "Supergirl Lives," after the Superman Lives script Smith wrote in the '90s for Warner Bros.).
prevnextFROZEN
In his recent Facebook Live, director Kevin Smith answered a myriad of questions about his upcoming The Flash episode as well possible gigs with the other CW DC shows. When asked if he put any Frozen reference into "Killer Frost, Smith told fans to keep their eyes open.
"C'mon sir, what kind of hack comedian do you think I am? YES! Of course, we did. The whole episode's called Killer Frost. At one point, look for the in-joke. I'm not going to spoil it here but look for the hidden in-joke, not even an in-joke, look for the hidden reference, look for the Frozen joke there you go. When Caitlin takes Julian Albert hostage, its fast, and you gotta look close, blink and you'll miss it. It's an establishing shot of the Frozen food place, but when you see it, you'll know that we were thinking about you and that exact question."
The answer? The frozen food company is "Ledded Goh," a wink and a nod to "Let It Go," of course.
prevnextALL-STAR TEAM-UP
All-Star Team-Up was the name of a season 1 episode of The Flash, which guest-starred The Atom.
So that little bit of dialogue, where H.R. Wells refers to himself and Cisco by the name of a Silver Age DC Comics title, is also kind of a meta joke referencing The Flash itself.
prevnextKILLER FROST'S KISS
The "frozen kiss" is a trademark of Killer Frost, especially since in the comics, she's a frequent nemesis of Firestorm, with whom she has a romance.
This is, as far as we can remember, the first time we've seen it in live action.
prevnextHONORABLE MENTIONS
Killer Frost
We've talked and talked about Caitlin Snow's "comic book destiny" as Killer Frost, but it's worth noting that she finally got there this week, especially since it's the episode's title.
That Horn Blare
It sure seems like composer Blake Neely gave Star Wars superfan Kevin Smith a nice reference to the "holy trilogy" when Caitlin is being seduced by the Dark Side at the Acolyte's house.
There was a little bit of brass arrangement that sounded distinctly Star Wars-y -- like one of those foreboding brass parts that John Williams used to associate with the Empire.
Grunberg
Greg Grunberg, Kevin Smith's co-host on Geeking Out, appears in the episode as a Central City police officer. Will he show up in future, non-Smith-directed episodes? Don't count it out! Maybe he can develop mental powers like he had in Heroes.
Faster Than Barry
Wally starts out "faster than Barry could at the beginning." In the comics, Wally West eventually becomes faster than Barry Allen by being the first Flash to discover the Speed Force.
...Also, Wally walks out of his first speed tests wearing a STAR Labs sweatshirt, just like Barry did at the start of the series.
Lightning
As Barry leaves the CSI lab for the last (?) time...lightning. It's reminiscent of the pilot and a nice touch.
And totally intentional, says Kevin Smith:
prevYou like that? I asked to do it then worried it might be too heavy-handed. But it came from the heart of this fan of #TheFlash. #KillerFrost https://t.co/zv57cfqUGT
