If an animatic found by ComingSoon.net winds up coming true, then not only the villain of the upcoming film New Mutants can be spotted. Sitting on the shoulder of a character that is most likely Magik, the younger sister of Colossus is a special surprise: Lockheed.

An alien dragon, Lockheed has traditionally been the pet - or more apporpriately the constant, loyal companion of Kitty Pryde in the pages of Marvel Comics. His gimmick is pretty simple: he's purple, he breathes fire, he's a dragon. Only in relative recent years have his alien origins (and ability to speak) been explored, but don't expect that to come too heavily into play in a feature film.

Lockheed's inclusion will be welcomed by X-Men fans who have long considered him a fan-favorite. He's appeared as a companion in the video game Marvel Heroes (for Kitty), and even appeared on the NYCC exclusive Funko POP figure for Kitty this year.

This may give us some insight into how 20th Century Fox plans to use Magik in the New Mutants movie. She was traditionally the younger member of the team, but not necessarily in a "Kitty Pride" role. Kitty, when she joined the X-Men, was much younger than the others in the line-up, bringing her youthful (and headstrong) energy to the crew. With the way Magik is drawn here, it looks like Illyana may carry that role.

Lockheed, meanwhile, does spread his wings and fly, and breath fire, upon the apparent villain or at least one of the villains, Demon Bear. The villain, a bear and a demon (yeah, they used a lot of descriptive names back then - Magik uses magic, too, naturally - there's even a character who calls himself Cannonball - he flies fast and is invulnerable while in flight - so yeah), first appeared in New Mutants #3. He's probably not the villain, so much as a villain, especially the way this animatic shows the battle as just being Magik and Lockheed versus Demon Bear.

New Mutants is targeting a Spring 2018 release, which would put it a few months past the release of Deadpool 2. It's rumored to be casting now, and if it seems like it's been on Fox's docket forever, that's because it pretty much has - it's been talked about for a couple of years now, and producer Simon Kinberg has been promoting it heavily for the last several months, answering questions about it extensively this past summer.
