Born in November 1987, Gillan was born in Inverness, Scotland to parents Marie and Raymond. At 16, the actress decided to move to Edinburgh and then London where she earned a Bachelors of Arts in acting. While studying, Gillan began working part-time as a model, but she continued to pursue acting as it was her main goal.

In her early career, Gillan appeared on several television series in minor roles. It was in 2009 that the actress caught her big break when she was cast as Amy Pond in Doctor Who. Her involvement with the cult sci-fi series brought her international fame, and the Doctor Who fandom was quick to welcome Gillan to its folds. The actress stayed on the show until 2012 when she and co-star Arthur Darvill exited the series.

After Doctor Who, the actress worked on several films like Not Another Happy Ending and Oculus. She was cast in her next big role when Marvel Studios chose Gillan to play Nebula in the film Guardians of the Galaxy. The actress is set to reprise her role in the blockbuster's sequel.

Moving forward, Gillan has several films slated to premiere. Alongside Guardians of the Galaxy, the actress has a film called The Circle set to release which she filmed with Emma Watson, Tom Hanks, and John Boyega. Currently, Gillan is filming alongside Dwayne Johnson and Jack Black for a Jumanji sequel.
