The newest trailer for Riverdale, The CW's Archie Comics-based television series, begins with all-American teen Archie Andrews (KJ Apa) making out with Ms. Grundy (Sarah Habel), the young music teacher, in a secluded area. As a loud noise rings out, their passionate embrace comes to a screeching halt and we see them looking up and toward wherever the sound came from. Cut to night: Two young men discover Jason Blossom's dead body, which is floating just below the surface of some body of water.
We then see Jughead Jones (Cole Sprouse) getting very upset with Archie. "A kid is dead, Archie," he barks, "and she's telling you not to say anything."
Based on this trailer, the assumption is that Archie and Ms. Grundy witnessed something that day that would explain the mysterious death of the high school golden boy. But, to not expose their forbidden relationship, Archie and Ms. Grundy aren't sharing that information with authorities.
The live-action series offers a bold, subversive take on Archie, Betty, Veronica, and their friends, exploring small-town life and the darkness and weirdness bubbling beneath Riverdale's wholesome facade. The show will focus on the eternal love triangle of Archie Andrews, girl-next-door Betty Cooper, and rich socialite Veronica Lodge, and will include the entire cast of characters from the comic books—including Archie's rival, Reggie Mantle, and his slacker best friend, Jughead Jones.
Riverdale stars KJ Apa as Archie Andrews, Lili Reinhart as Betty Cooper, Camila Mendes as Veronica Lodge, Ashleigh Murray as Josie McCoy, Luke Perry as Fred Andrews, Cole Sprouse as Jughead Jones, Madelaine Petsch as Cheryl Blossom, Ross Butler as Reggie Mantle, Casey Cott as Kevin Keller, Mädchen Amick as Alice Cooper, and Marisol Nichols as Hermione Lodge.
Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa (Supergirl, Glee) writes and executive produces, along with exec producers Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, and Jon Goldwater. Lee Toland Krieger directs.
